I’ve come to love mornings. Growing up and even throughout my teens, twenties and thirties I was NOT a morning person. At all. If you woke me up, well let’s just say I did not greet you with a smile. But now? Each new day feels like a fresh start—a chance to reset and focus on what’s important since I’ve learned how to set a morning routine.

For the longest time, though, my mornings felt rushed and chaotic, and honestly, it showed in how my day went. However, once I started creating a morning routine that worked for me, everything changed. It wasn’t overnight, but step by step, I learned how to make my mornings one of the best parts of my day.

The Foundation of Your Day

Your morning is like the foundation of a house. Start strong, and everything else holds up better. I used to wake up late which automatically made me behind, rushing to get things done and scrambling to keep up. It wasn’t until I started carving out time for what really mattered that I noticed a shift. When I take control of my mornings, I feel calmer, more focused, and way more productive.

Now, I look forward to that quiet time before the world wakes up. There’s something about sipping my coffee and knowing I’m starting my day on my terms. It’s a small thing, but it makes a huge difference. When you prioritize your mornings, you’re not just making time for yourself—you’re setting the tone for how the entire day unfolds.

Here is How I Did It

Step One: Picture Your Perfect Morning

Have you ever thought about what your ideal morning looks like? For me, it’s about starting with something that fills me up—whether it’s enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee or journaling for a few minutes before diving into tasks. I had to sit down and really think about what I wanted my mornings to feel like. For you, it might be squeezing in some workout, spending quiet time with your thoughts, or even just having breakfast without feeling rushed.

Take a moment to imagine it. Write it down if you can—seeing it on paper helps bring it to life. I did this myself, and it gave me a clear idea of what I wanted to work toward. It’s not about getting it perfect right away; it’s about having a vision to guide you.

Step Two: Make Time in Your Morning

Finding time for a morning routine isn’t always easy, but I’ve learned it’s worth it. Waking up earlier was tough at first—I’m not naturally a morning person—but those extra 15 to 30 minutes felt like a gift once I got used to it. I started small, setting my alarm just a little earlier each day, and now it’s second nature.

Prepping the night before helped a lot too. I started laying out clothes, packing lunches, and getting everything ready so mornings felt less hectic. I even got my family involved—teaching my kids to handle small tasks like packing their backpacks gave me back precious minutes. If I can do it, trust me, so can you.

Step Three: Focus on What Matters

Not everything we do in the morning is necessary—I learned this the hard way. For the longest time, I’d spend my mornings scrolling through my phone, thinking it was a relaxing way to start the day. But honestly, it just left me feeling drained. When I swapped that time for journaling or even just enjoying my coffee mindfully, my mornings felt so much better.

Take a look at how you’re spending your mornings. Are there habits you can adjust? For me, cutting out unnecessary tasks and delegating others gave me time to focus on what truly mattered. It’s all about working smarter, not harder.

Step Four: Create Your Game Plan

Once I figured out what I wanted my mornings to look like, I wrote it all down. For me, writing things out makes it easier to stick to them. I started by deciding on my priorities, like planning my day and enjoying a quiet coffee. Then I worked everything else around those must-haves. It wasn’t perfect right away—I tweaked it as I went—but having a plan made all the difference.

Step Five: Turn It Into a Habit

Sticking to a morning routine took effort at first, but now it feels automatic. I didn’t expect it to become second nature so quickly, but consistency made it happen. If I missed a day, I reminded myself to get back on track the next morning. The key was giving myself grace while staying focused on my goal.

Review and Tweak Your Routine

Every few weeks, I take a step back and look at my morning routine. Is it still working? Am I still making time for what matters most? Sometimes I realize I need to make adjustments—like shifting my focus from journaling to exercise when my energy feels low. Other times, I celebrate that my routine is still serving me well.
